What Is Web Hosting – Types Of Web Hosting

What is web hosting:

To make a website visible on the internet, the website’s files and data is physically stored on a computer which is connected to the internet. These high-powered large computers are called web servers. Website hosts are companies that physically house several web servers in a location called a data center. There are a large variety of web hosting solutions based on the amount of server space you need for a website.

Shared web hosting:

In shared web hosting, the hosting account is one of many accounts on a server. Shared hosting is something that website files are housed on a server along with the files of other websites by sharing the server’s bandwidth and resources among all the websites on that server. You have little control over the server settings and operations.
It is like renting a unit in an apartment complex where you share parking space, storage with others in the complex. It is an affordable solution that is generally well suited to most small businesses whose daily traffic is under 2000 visitors. By sharing a hosting server with others, shared hosting allows you to get your small business website the power and space it needs, at a low cost.

Dedicated web hosting:

Dedicated web hosting is something in which you lease the amount of exclusive server space you think you’ll need and you can have full use of the server bandwidth and resources. In this type of hosting there’s no sharing of space with other websites. You can take total control and customize the software and computing operations as needed. Dedicating hosting is best for large traffic sites and applications.

VPS hosting:

It stands for virtual private server. In VPS hosting, a physical server is partitioned into multiple private environments. This is called ” virtualization.” In this plan, you do not need to share resources and bandwidth like you do with shared hosting. So while others may reside on the same physical server as you, your space is yours alone.
Like dedicated hosting, VPS hosting allows a high degree of control and customization. You can change server settings, install software, add users. It is like a single building that is divided into multiple private units of various sizes. Each unit has its own storage area that does not have to be shared with other websites and you can control and customize it completely. In general, VPS hosting is more affordable than dedicated hosting. It’s a good solution when you want your own server space and resources

Cloud hosting:

The term “cloud” can be sometimes confusing and misleading as well. There is nothing airy about it. Like all other types of hosting, cloud hosting relies on very real hardware – servers. But unlike shared and dedicated hosting, cloud hosting uses new technologies to spread the files, data, resources, bandwidth, and computing operations among multiple servers that are networked to act as one system.
Cloud hosting distributes the files, data, and resources of internet sites and applications among multiple connected servers that operate as a single system. This distribution among servers provide redundant data storage and guarantees exclusive use of server resources, such as processing and memory.
Cloud web hosting also provides great flexibility to upgrade or downgrade your hosting environment and accommodate for periods of higher or lower traffic. This makes cloud hosting a powerful solution for large, high-traffic internet sites and applications that require the highest level of performance. But managing a cloud hosting solution is not a simple process. It takes the skills of an experienced Linux server administrator of IT professional, so it’s not a good solution for most small businesses.
